As Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Eduardo Paes has increased the city’s international profile, successfully securing the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. He is an outspoken advocate for cities to lead the world on pressing global issues. He first entered public service at the age of 23 when he was appointed Deputy Mayor of the Jacarepaguá and Barra districts in Rio. Prior to being elected Mayor in 2008, Paes was elected alderman and twice as a federal congressman. In 2013, Mayor Paes was elected unanimously as Chairman of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group.
